Great activity during a weather unit. 2 liter soda bottle cut in half. Put about an inch and a half of warm water (w blue food coloring) in the bottom. Invert the top of the bottle with the lid on and fill with ice. Watch the water condensate and watch it "rain"

Ms D's Garden

The Science lab is a dramatic play area created to encourage budding chemists by using simple tools to mix common kitchen "chemicals" and observe the reactions. I used clear plastic containers, spoons, eye droppers and dosing syringes to measure and mix vinegar, water, salt and baking powder. I also included small vials of colored water. I introduced this area with specific rules, spoons are for powders and mixing, eye droppers and dosing syringes are for liquids. No Pouring! This was…

Make a CLOUD! Fun science activity for kids. For younger children, this will have to be a demo (aerosol hairspray or blown out lit match is needed in a glass jar), but the children can still observe and record their Scientific method steps and can 'touch cloud' afterwards! :)

ROY G. BIV Colors of the rainbow...great activity/craft to include with weather study.

Wild About Weather

This was an exciting week in our 1st grade classroom. As I mentioned earlier in the week, we have been learning about weather. The kids really seemed to enjoy all of the activities we did. They already knew a lot about weather and were eager to share their own weather facts and stories. I have to admit this is the first year I have ever heard the kids talk about a “tsunami”. I guess they’ve been paying attention to world events. On Tuesday we learned more about wind. Being from Kansas we…

Cloud Jars

"Cloud Jars." We've seen them around and they seemed so appealing that we just had to try them for ourselves! We used this activity to practice fine motor skills, focus and coordination, all while learning the very basic concept of how clouds hold water and when they become too heavy it starts to rain. I'm not sure I've ever come across another activity that demonstrates this in such a fun, easy and spectacular way. You'll need coloured water, a clear jar/glass/vase with water in it, shaving…

How's reading coming along this school year? By now I'm sure you're in full swing with guided reading. I recently went to both Indiana and Tennessee for the SDE Kinergarten and 1st grade conferences.
