Elizabethan man's shirt, dated around 1580 - 1590. Jacobean woman's shift, dated around 1610. Rare undergarments, made of linen and embroidered with fine black needlework depicting natural and geometric patterns. Undershirts were principle pieces of the Elizabethan and Jacobean era, providing a washable, breathable layer beneath heavy doublets and kirtles. (Fashion Museum in Bath, England. Forgeng, Jeffrey. Daily Life in Elizabethan England. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO LLC, 2010.)

"Extant Clothing - Funeral Dress of Eleonora de Toledo." Bodice. Very pretty, (...though it does look like someone may have been murdered while wearing it...)

Excellent example of Italian embroidery in silk and metal thread for this linen smock, late 16th century. This would transform any contemporary wardrobe, would it not? @Karen Bitterman Museum of Art
