[Group Mural Enlargements] Each student was given a 2x2 inch square that featured a small portion of a popular work of Art History. Using a grid, each square was enlarged to a wopping 12x12 inch square and then meticulously replecated and enlarged the small square paying close attention to the proportions.

Every quarter, 8th graders create a portrait in the style of Picasso. We have created these in a multiple of ways in the past but this collage method has really been a successful start for all students. This lesson was adapted from United Art & Education's recent Project Guide.

Here is a nice example of the first lesson in the Observing Insects unit. For this assignment, students chose two different insects to draw from the observation of insect photos. They arranged them into a composition of their choice, making sure the insects were the focus of the work. I had them work on a 4 1/2" by 6" black paper. They drew with a regular pencil first, and then added value and shading with a white colored pencil. The high contrast really allowed the details of each insect to…
