Château d'Arques (Castèl de Arcas), Aude, Languedoc, France... www.catharcountry.info ... aka the Donjon d'Arques. Often called a Cathar Castle, it was built not by Occitan Cathars but a second generation French Catholic Crusader, Gilles de Voisins. Gilles rebuilt the village of Arques as a bastide in 1268 and also started work on the present nearby castle. It was completed in the third generation by Gilles II in 1316.

Norman castle keep cross-section - there was a 'standard' castle design of sorts that builders conformed to. At first built of wood, within the first few years of William's coronation the material of choice for castle construction was stone.
