The reconstruction from Marcus Junkelmann: Arthur's dragon standard - given to him by Merlin in the Vulgate Cycle - was bronze and breathed fire when carried into battle. It was probably very similar to the Roman dragon standard, adopted in the latter days of the Roman Empire. Sir Kay was Arthur's standard bearer and carried the standard before Arthur both on journeys and into battle.
