Godfrey de Saint-Omer and eight other knights was the first group of knights in the Order. They had few financial resources and relied on donations to survive. Their emblem was of two knights riding on a single horse, emphasising the Order's poverty. Around 1129 the Order was officially endorsed by the Catholic Church.
