Switchback Highway, Chattanooga, Tennessee. This road, which carries traffic up the eastern side of Walden’s Ridge from Mountain Creek Road in Red Bank, is named for the three switchbacks that form the shape of a “W” at the top of the ridge. The “W Road” was begun in 1890 to replace the old “corduroy road” used by early settlers moving cattle up and down the mountain and by both armies during the Civil War.
