Safety Coffins: During the 18th century, during a cholera epidemic, it was discovered that approx 2% of people buried were actually still alive. Several types of "safety coffins" became all the rage. Some had bells on the surface that could be rung from inside the coffin, others had windows, and some tombs, like the one pictured, were just easy to open (from the inside.)
