Diagram of muscle tissue. I love this. No wonder we are so strong! Look at all those fibers packed in there! I remember learning this in Anatomy and Physiology and nerding out :-)

Skeletal muscle is responsible for all voluntary movements, such as running . Also involved in involuntary actions, such as breathing, shivering and maintaining posture. Cardiac muscle is responsible for the beating action of the heart. Smooth muscle creates the movement in many hollow internal organs, such as the gut, bladder, and blood vessels, and is under the control of the autonomic nervous system. All 3 muscle types use the same sliding filament mechanism. (6/18/2013) Anatomy…

This picture shows what each muscle type looks like under a microscope. The cardiac and skeletal muscles are striated.

Neuromuscular junction. The nerve (in white) transmits its signal to the skeletal muscle (grey tubes) to generate contraction.

This infographic describes skeletal muscles, which are structurally different from heart muscle and the smooth muscle that controls digestion. Unlike heart and smooth msucle, skeletal muscle can be voluntarily controlled. Skeletal muscle is also called striated muscle because of its striped appearance.
