The Luncheon on the Grass - Édouard Manet, 1887. During the 1860s, the Salon jury routinely rejected half of the works submitted by Monet and friends in favour of works by artists faithful to the approved style. The1863 jury rejected Manet's (Le déjeuner..) because it depicted a nude with two clothed men at a picnic. While the Salon jury accepted nudes in historical and allegorical paintings it condemned Manet for a realistic nude in a contemporary setting.
