At its peak in 1941, the company operating Independence Mine employed 204 men, blasted almost 12 miles of tunnels, and produced 34,416 ounces of gold worth $ 1,204,560; today $ 17,208,000.  World War Two rendered gold mining nonessential, although Independence Mine continued to operate due to the presence of sheelite (a source of tungsten, which is a strategic metal).  But supplies were low and the mine closed in 1943.

Templeton Farm

One of my all time favorite abandoned farms. No power lines or distracting modern buildings in the background makes for a wonderful open setting. (Was) Located in Audubon County, Iowa.

El Dorado Church

This old church is located near the Northeast Iowa town of El Dorado. I might have guessed it was a school if we hadn't seen the cemetery located right behind it.

Weiland House

I was told by the nice old guy who farms the land around this property (AKA the guy who saw me standing at the edge of the driveway by the road wondering what I was doing) that this house was last occupied by an old bachelor that lived here until the mid 1950's. Located in Audubon County, Iowa.

Long's Homestead Barn

This is one of the more interesting barns located in my area. It's unique (at least around here) in the fact that it has slate shingles which I'm sure have helped extend its life, and that sign is pretty cool too. Located in Boone County, Iowa.
