August 14, 1889 I have realized that Americans do not understand us Italians. They take us for granted with our labor, and do not even consider us an equal race. We celebrated Festa Della Repubblica on June 2, and we received much discrimination from outsiders. (For we live in an area called "Little Italy.") They see our customs as inferior towards theirs. My father was cut from his job digging underground to be replaced by an American. They believe that we have taken their jobs from them.
