Lucy Virginia Semple Ames, 1869. Known as the "Queen of St. Louis society," Ames was the daughter of Senator James Semple and wife of millionaire Edgar Ames. A businesswoman, suffragette, advocate for women's education and feminist, Ames took over management of her husband's business interests after he left her a widow and single mother at age 30. She also created & was president of the Ames Realty Company. She became a member of the Equal Suffrage Society in 1869. Missouri History Museum
