To initially awaken the inner Shaman from slumber, we must remember our wilderness and deeply reconnect with nature. We have to get outside and expose ourselves to the elements so that we can reignite our awareness that we are nature. Observe everything. Tune in. Synchronize with this force and allow it to fill you with the wisdom of your own wilderness ~Melinda Rodriguez

Malagan (a.k.a. Malanggan) ceremony, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The ceremony has its roots in funerary rites, but the ceremonies take several days and cover an enormous amount of social and political territory in the process. Malagan masks are now world-famous. Traditionally these were burnt at the conclusion of the event; in modern times most are now retained, as the carving tradition is now only known by a few. Photo ©Chris Rainier
