This still life by Meléndez is exceptional in its format and composition. The setting in a luscious landscape is also unusual for him; his compositions are usually set against stark backgrounds. The painting is similar to a series of four which were painted for the Nuevo Cabinete de Historia Natural of the Prince of Asturias (now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid). It is likely that the Museum’s still life originally had a pendant canvas of the same size, with a landscape.

Luis Meléndez | The Afternoon Meal (La Merienda) | The Met

Luis Egidio Meléndez is one of the greatest still-life painters of the eighteenth century. He mainly produced small canvases representing everyday objects, fruits, and vegetables. His most important commission was a series of forty-four still lifes painted for the Prince of Asturias, the future King Charles IV, for the palace at Aranjuez, around 1772

Still Life With Watermelons and Apples in a Landscape (1771). Near-photographic verisimilitude. The leathery grain of cantaloupe hide, gleam of copper pots; spongy insides of broken bread loaf, dull grain of old wood, transparency of glass: everything is seen with a near-microscopic attention to detail and rendered with almost imperceptible painterly touch. No drawings... exist, and while it looks as though he must have used a device like a camera obscura or a camera lucida, no evidence of…

Rather than a tabletop, dramatic landscapes with windswept skies are the settings for mounds of prickly artichokes, clumps of drooping pea pods and scatterings of ripe tomatoes and pears. Theatrical landscape of history painting. International fruits and vegetables, hailing from the Middle East to Peru, is laid out across Spain's epic soil. As if Meléndez, using the only means available, suggests what might have been — if only he had a royal crack at a different kind of subject.

Mastery of light, expressive color, material quality and, above all, detail. Luis Meléndez (Naples, 1716-Madrid, 1780) has the ability to captivate the audience with a challenge to realism that transcends the canvas and the objects represented. / Luis Meléndez.
