Some easy inkle weaving patterns using two colors, article with photos and pattern drafts by Annie MacHale

Simple Two-Color Patterns

This post pays tribute to simplicity. A good combination of two colors can create a simple but satisfying piece. Below are a few of my favorite ways to use only two colors in a plain weave design. You'll find the pattern chart below each one. If you use any of these to weave a piece yourself, I'd love to see the results. Send a link or a photo to me at Play@WeaverGuitarStraps.com. FOR SIMPLICITY OF USE, CONSIDER THE TOP ROW TO BE HEDDLED THREADS AND THE BOTTOM ROW TO BE OPEN THREADS ON ALL…

Patterns for 1" Wide Bands

Most often, I seem to work in 2" widths, creating the guitar straps which are the main product that I sell. Consequently, many of the pattern drafts which I have previously shared are for 2" wide bands. Recently, I made some new products in 1" widths and had difficulty adjusting my designer's mind to this narrower width. I was using the same yarn but had only half as many threads to design with. Wow! At first I was frustrated, but then, after a few tries, I started creating designs which I…

There is a series of archived blog posts here from Ruth MacGregor describing how she wove several bands and joined them together to make herself a backstrap.

ASpinnerWeaver: A Dozen Plain Weave Pattern Drafts - lots of patterns on this blog. Thanks, Annie!

A Dozen Plain Weave Pattern Drafts

Recently, I've been doing some fast weaving to build up my inventory of guitar straps. It is fun for me to line them all up and compare and contrast designs. Hopefully, you will enjoy seeing them, too. The pattern drafts are included so that you can use them to help design your own bands. I ask that you don't copy any EXACTLY, as I assure my customers that these are one of-a-kind designs. All are 2" wide and mostly use my favorite sport weight cotton. In some cases, heavier or thinner yarns…

The new inkle loom

5 July: The new inkle loom

Last night it had to be done - try out the new inkle loom, made by Michael Williams and collected from the Woolfest. The yarn is a ball of merino/tencel sock yarn from the stash which will never be socks, and which will probably make a very nice little woven pouch. There are 71 warp threads , and plenty of width left for a wider band. Not all the pegs are used for this band. I find it's a bit high to work at when it's on the table, but it will fit on my lap, resting against the table at the…

ASpinnerWeaver: Design Elements - Chains

Design Elements - Chains

A chain happens when two single lines undulating in opposite directions collide. Because they add a more interesting element than simple lines, I use chains in many of my designs. FOR SIMPLICITY OF USE, CONSIDER THE TOP ROW TO BE HEDDLED THREADS AND THE BOTTOM ROW TO BE OPEN THREADS ON ALL OF THE DRAFTS. A chain can make a great focal point in the center of a pattern. Here are a few different placements.

A Word From Claudia: Inkle cuff bracelet on the Mirrix Loom

Inkle cuff bracelet on the Mirrix Loom

All sorts of poses from the two inkle weave bracelets I got from the strip I wove. The last part of the strip could probably be turned into a bracelet, but it was a little wider than the first part of it (or last part of it . . . I don't know which end is which). My next attempt will be to put a 20 or 22 dent spring on the loom so that the warps don't have any space in between on the sides making this a genuine inkle band. I will once again use the railroad novelty yarn as weft because I…

Two inkle bands

Weaving again

Inspired by the fantastic blog Backstrap weaving, I continued weaving bands, this time trying my hand at a simple but nice technique that allows for a bit more complicated patterning: warp floats.…
