Boro is a Japanese word for "tattered rags". It refers to the way people used to recycle small pieces of fabric. These complex blue textile pieces tell stories about Japanese families, their rural way of life, and economic situation in the northern part from the Edo to the early Showa period (17th - 20th century). Each piece is handed down from generation to generation. For decades traces of darning and quilting were added to increase their lifespan. Untitled piece (2012) by London-based fiber artist Kim Winter who wrote "After printing one of the mokume pieces with normal transparent binder, I left it to dry and then opened the pleats out flat. At regular intervals I then stitched sets of the pleats together and left other pleats ungathered, removing the original thread used to pull the pleats together." via the artist's blog Flextiles Art
