Sponsor: Dolan Geiman Art

I want to introduce you lovelies to Dolan Geiman, a mixed media artist whose inspiration comes from southern music and nature. He makes his pieces out of salvaged wood, found objects, and other recycled materials. I really admire the layered construction and modern rustic charm of his work. He and his partner Ali live in Chicago and sell online through Etsy, indepedent local retailers, and various art fairs around the States. Incredible talent, don't you think? {Images by Dolan Geiman}

Steel girders on the underside of the New River Gorge Bridge in Fog, West Virginia by Todd Stradford

Steel girders on the underside of the New River Gorge Bridge in Fog, West Virginia

Walking the catwalk under the bridge in the fog was a different experience. When the bridge was new, anyone could walk under the bridge. They later fenced it off. Running Fayette Station in the fog was just as fun. The highest we ran it was 14' on the Fayette gauge. At that level all 3 of the Keeney Brothers rapids were one long chute with no stops in the middle. 4' was the best level we ran it as it was pushy but had lots of routes.

"Mountain people" have a very different culture & way of doing/saying things than most southerners. We are 'clan-ish,' quiet & ALWAYS observant, stubborn, independent, & hard working. Passed down by our Scotch/Irish/Cherokee ancestors. We are rough and tough because we had to be to survive. This too, was passed down through ancestry. Our ancestry was the very backbone to this country actually becoming a country! Mountain people and our culture, will always remain.
