Mlle Serpolette, in an ad for Dunlop pneumatic bicycle tires. She was one of the earliest women to race, and a keen competitor -- at least once breaking two ribs in a fall during a race.

Alfonsina Strada Italian cyclist and the only woman to have participated in Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's three major stage races. And she looks like my mum.

Alfonsina Morini Strada (1891-1959), la donna che corse il Giro d'Italia 1924, in una foto del 1923 all'Arena di Milano. Al suo fianco Giovanni Gerbi (1885-1955), il "diavolo rosso", grande ciclista dell'epoca dei pionieri, che mai riuscì a vincere il "suo" Giro d'Italia.
