Elsa Schiaparelli | Suit, 1938-39. The colour of this suit, Schiaparelli's signature Shocking pink, was dubbed thus because it represented her desire to shock those around her with her unique and sometimes avant-garde designs. Her goal was to design clothing and accessories that possessed an artistic aesthetic, rather than the more conventional idea of fashion and beauty.

c. 1950's SCHIAPARELLI, Paris "Shocking Pink" Hat! If Elsa Schiaparelli is known for anything... it was her signature hue of shocking pink. So I love to find the ultimate Schiaparelli hat in that signature color! Great for hat or Schiaparelli collectors to go with the Iconic. This hat is miroir velvet ("mirror" velvet - so shiny!) calotte (skull cap shape).

Dress (image 1) | House of Schiaparelli | French | 1932-35 | linen | Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Accession Number: 2009.300.1859 | The blue & white mottled effect on this dress is reminiscent of denim, the quintessential American fabric first worn by gold miners in the nineteenth century. It was still a relatively obscure, working-class fabric during the first half of the twentieth century, making it a witty & quirky choice for a couture garment.
