California Red Sheep date back only to the early 1970's when Dr. Glenn Spurlock in Davis, California crossed Tunis and Barbados sheep.  His goal to create a wool-less breed failed, but the remarkable hybrid was then bred by the Souliers in Winters, California. With extensive effort and selective breeding, other sheep breeders became interested.  Today there are over 50 breeders throughout the U.S., and over 2,200 Red enrolled in the California Red Sheep Registry.
