Ferns, white jasmine, ivy and moss getting on well in the little courtyard outside the kitchen. A 'rescued space' surrounded by high walls, it offers protection against the extremes of the weather, being cool in summer, warm in winter and always a little on the damp side.
At the far end of the garden is an iron bench where I can sit, in the shade, and work. Dark enough that am able I work on my laptop, and sheltered enough to stop the wind blowing my page proofs about, the space feels secret, even though in reality it is anything but. Cornus Gloria Birkett is in flower right now, resembling white butterflies resting on a bush.
