Surnommé « le comte sorcier » (the Wizard Earl), il fut un humaniste et un mécène des sciences et des arts. Compromis dans la Conspiration des poudres, il fut emprisonné à la Tour de Londres de novembre 1605 à 1621.

St. James's Palace, was commissioned by Henry VIII, on the site of a former leper hospital (disbanded in 1532) dedicated to St James the Less (from whom the Palace takes its name). The new palace was  constructed in the red-brick Tudor style around four courtyards. It  became the principal residence of the monarch in London from 1698,  when Whitehall Palace was destroyed by fire, and became the  administrative centre of the monarchy.
