Empress Anne Ioanovna has heard about it and wanted to buy it but Russian treasury was empty.  So Anne sent her jester to Duke Gaston of Medici with a proposal to exchange the diamond on 55 thousand Russian soldiers! He refused. The diamond was inherited by Habsburg Empress.
