The Kooikerhondje was bred in the 18th-century Netherlands for flushing and retrieving game birds. It attracts curious birds by bouncing about and waving its bushy tails. The breed practically disappeared in World War I but was bred back into existence by Baroness Hardenbroek van Ammerstool, only to be very nearly decimated again by World War II. Due to the small genetic pool, some have inherited defects but most are good-tempered even with children & suited to urban living.
