Although mothers tried desperately to hide and protect their children, few as young as this child, tattooed with the number 23141, survived Auschwitz. In the concentration camps, work provided the only hope of survival, a possibility foreclosed to the very young and the elderly. As Auschwitz moved into its final, extermination-camp phase, some children, especially twins, escaped the gas chambers upon arrival only to be subjected to cruel medical experiments.

Simone Arnold-Leibster.  When her parents were put into concentration camps for refusing to 'Heil Hitler', at the age of 11 she was arrested by juvenile authorities and put into a Nazi penitentiary home.  For two years she was forbidden to talk and was forced to do hard labor. At the end of the war, she was reunited with her parents, rebuilt her life and went on to devote her life to teaching others the value of 'loving your enemies and praying for those persecuting you'.

Here, at Gardelegen Concentration Camp, the guards panicked as Allied forces drew closer. In an effort to stop the prisoners from escaping or being liberated by the advancing Americans the guards locked them inside the warehouses and burned them alive. By the time the American Army arrived to the camp, the warehouse was smoking and most of the prisoners were dead.

A mother hides her face in shame, c.1948, Chicago.  Forced with eviction and penniless, the parents have literally put their children up for sale. This was not a joke…What’s interesting is that the accompanying article did not pass judgement and there are no calls for whisking the children away to protective services.

Physician Eugene Lazowski discovered injecting healthy patients with dead bacteria could cause them to test positive for epidemic typhus without experiencing any symptoms. He & a friend worked secretly to inject thousands of Poles, deliberately creating the appearance of an epidemic. Fearful of contagious illness, Nazis quarantined the villages rather than sending them to concentration camps.
