On January 11, 1944, Major James Howard, alone,  flew his P-51 into thirty six German fighters that were attacking a formation of American B-17 bombers. For more than a hour, Howard defended the heavy bombers against the swarm of fighters, repeatedly attacking the enemy airplanes and shooting down as many as six. The leader of the bombers reported that, "For sheer determination and guts, it was the greatest exhibition I've ever seen.” Howard received the Medal of Honor for his action that…

This 72nd Fighter Squadron North American P-51 "Is This Trip Necessary" was almost junk after it crashed on the runway at Iwo Jima, Bonin Islands. The left landing gear collapsed as the plane landed; it was returning from an escort mission over Tokyo, Japan. 28 May 1945.

North American P-51C-10NT Mustang named "Boise Bee." Painted in the markings of Boise, ID native and 5 time WWII Fighter Ace Lt. Col Duane W. Beeson. The “Boise Bee” and Beeson flew in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force in England.

North American P-51C-5-NT Mustang (F-6C) Serial 42-103368 of the 15th TRS at St. Dizler Airfield (ALG A-64), France, Autumn 1944. This aircraft was flown by Captain John H. Hoefker, who used it to shoot down three enemy aircraft in June 1944. Captain Hoefker became the 10th Group's first Ace and finished the war with 8½ air victories, although he (unofficially) had 10.5 kills. This aircraft survived the war, only to be scrapped on June 26, 1946.
