"Scrimshaw Globe" Scrimshaw on Antique Ivory Cue Ball by Salmon Rashidi. These ivory billiard balls are becoming increasingly hard to come by. This one was made in the U.K. probably around the 1880s. What is generally overlooked is the preparation of the ball itself. When sanding and polishing the ball, care has to be taken to maintain the original spherical shape otherwise it will not fit properly in the stand. A globe engraved on an ostrich egg, dated 1504, has emerged as perhaps the oldest known globe to include the New World. The globe's depiction of the Western Hemisphere shows South America, better known at the time from the voyages of the earliest European explorers than North America.

We lived on Nantucket Island as mentioned later on this board. The history of scrimshaw was huge there. New Bedford also carries on the tradition.
