Museum etiquette has shifted from "Don't touch!" to "Touch" as museum educators have realized the value of tactile learning. In the past. rules about not touching were not just to protect artifacts. Touch did more than create physical and emotional connections with objects. It was a way of acquiring social prestige, of touching with one's own hands artefacts and artworks which had passed through a succession of distinguished hands in the past. It was also a means of transferring power.
