Winterhalter's 1862 portrait of Empress Eugenie of France (1) depicts her wearing a pair of bracelets composed of pearls and brilliants (2 & 3). Her jewels for another portrait, by de Pommayrac, dated 1860-65 (6), include a string of pearls with pendant pearls (3) and a diadem made for her in 1858 by Fontenay (5). Napoleon had jeweler Alexandre-Gabriel Lemonnier (ca 1808-1884) make this piece ca 1850. In the Louis XVI style, a filigree silver-gilt mount is over crusted with 1998 small diamonds. They surround much larger pearls, & give them absolute priority. The largest drop-shaped pearl in the top-most position is believed to be the “Perle Napoleon”

She had the jewelers take the napoléonique pearls which was originally made for Marie~Louise, to make her wedding jewels. Eugenie was a lover of Pearls and can be seen in the portrait below. The crown features 212 pearls and 1998 brilliant-cut diamonds, with a total weight of 63.30 carats.
