Ottoman kalkan (shield), domed and of circular form composed of a wood core with concentric wicker woven with colored thread, the exterior made up of radial steel bars linking the steel frame, steel domed center boss with rosette and five square finials. The interior with woven leather strap, and iron rings for suspension. The flexibility of the wicker absorbed the power of arrows and swords.

A FINE GOLD AND SILVER-DAMASCENED SHIELD QAJAR IRAN, 19TH CENTURY

A fine gold and silver-damascened shield, Qajar Iran, century.

Indian dhal (shield), 2nd half 17th century, steel; with gold overlay, hunting and landscape vignettes, Diam. 21 11/16 in. (57.7 cm), Met Museum. Mughal aesthetics are reflected in this early 18th c shield, ornately decorated with inlaid gold decoration on its rim and knob, (a ruler in a hunting scene, stylized floral and leaf motifs, intricately engraved landscape with architecture and rock formation. The profuse ornamentation of this shield suggests that it was likely a royal object.

A German circular shield, circa 1580  Slightly domed shield, worked in one piece, with an offset edge. Central by screwed spike of diamond section, on the front engraved linear ornaments radiating from the centre. Indian dhal (shield, 19th century, steel, gold, silk-velvet, Diam. 14 3/4 in. (37.47 cm); Wt. 2 lb. 14 oz. (1304 g), Met Museum. Probably from Lahore, this is a virtuoso demonstration of koftgari, or counterfeit damascening. In this technique, the steel is crosshatched with files, and designs cut from gold or silver foil or wire are applied to the rough area and burnished in place.
