The first daguerreotype of a woman ever known. It was taken in the early 1840's, and this is, what Marie perhaps would have looked like. She wore the same kind of dress and bonnet.

John William Draper -Dorothy Catherine Draper, 1840 The first portrait of Dorothy Catherine Draper was originally made in 1840 by her brother, Dr. John William Draper, as a daguerreotype. This was the earliest successful photograph made of the human face.

Robert Purvis, President of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, circa 1845.  The independently wealthy son of an English cotton broker and free black mother from South Carolina, Robert Purvis helped organize the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, then served as president of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society from 1845-1850, and as chairman of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee from 1852-1857. By his own account Purvis helped a slave a day reach freedom for close to thirty years.

Robert Purvis - His mother was a free woman of color and his father an Englishman. His grandmother was kidnapped in Morocco and brought to the USA as a slave. In 1833 Robert Purvis helped.
