1961, France - Coat by Balenciaga - Ivory and navy blue wool

The great couturier Cristobal Balenciaga possessed an unparalleled mastery of tailoring. A brilliant example is this deceptively simple, one.

I love this coat, the collar of the coat is what really stands out. Dior was one of the designers to take standard pieces during the 50s and turn up the volume. The asymmetrical, almost sideways cowl like collar was quite nouveau for the time and many designers including Balenciaga modified this style. The way the coat is tailored is to fit to Dior's new look because of how small the waist line is.
