The cast, tumour and portrait of Robert Penman  can be viewed in the History of Surgery Museum...The operation was a risky procedure, even for today’s standards, but Syme performed this operation without anaesthesia whilst the patient was seated upright. Penman, a bootmaker from Coldstream, was back at work 6 weeks after the operation and was reported to be in ‘perfect general health’ 30years after this operation.
