Sarah Kirsch, 1935-2013, German poet. Born Ingrid Bernstein in Limlingerode, Prussian Saxony. Studied biology & literature. Excluded from the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1965, then left the country herself, nevertheless being critical of the West as well. Mainly known for her poetry, but also wrote prose & translated children's books into German.
Ernest Hemingway had a style of prose -- sparse and lacking the Victorian flowery language that he disliked -- that has been emulated by generations of writers since. He won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for his writing.
