Adolph Hegewisch bought land in 1883 with the hope of establishing a town for his employees, following the lead of Pullman. The company town didn't achieve success. The neighborhood lacked jobs and was too far for residents to commute downtown for work. It remained sparsely populated until after WWII's influx of steel workers and municipal employees.  With areas such as Mann Park and Wolf Lake, it can offer outdoor activities that aren't as accessible in other parts of the city.

Ravenswood Avenue has an endless number of old buildings that were used as machine shops or by other forms of industrial businesses throughout the 1900s, and I often think "This is what Chicago is all about." And while some of these types businesses are still thriving in the area, many of these buildings have since been converted into offices, lofts, and artist spaces, among other things.

He started a project to combine his two passions, design and Chicago, and started making a logo for every community area in Chicago.

Dunning (Chicago). ...this area was slow to attract new residents. The most likely reason for this was the fact that Dunning's property was just south of Cook County's poor farm and insane asylum. After a single-track rail line was extended to the facilities in 1882, "the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul “crazy train” brought patients, supplies, and medicines" to the facilities. The county also built a station, naming it for Dunning, a name that became synonymous with the insane asylum.

Named for Andrew Dunning, who purchased 120 acres of land after the Civil War in hopes of starting a village and nursery, this area was slow to attract new.

Northcenter has deep ties to it's German heritage. It has German restaurants and taverns, and this cultural influence can be seen in the architecture of the buildings and homes that were built here in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  Northcenter has also become a more diverse and vibrant neighborhood, with a mix of retailers, restaurants, and live music along it's Lincoln Avenue.
