Russian Tsar Alexander II (left) emancipated the Russian serfs and President Abraham Lincoln (right) emancipated the slaves during the 1860s. Of course, both of these stories are more complicated, and true emancipation took much longer. Nonetheless, the impulse toward liberty (liberalism) was at its height in this latter part of the 1800s.
