The Half Full Chronicles

I spent my Saturday evening cooking up a deliciously great dish with someone equally as great. Now, I've got plenty of leftovers and Netflix can stream on my Wii. (No, the pasta did not have an affect on my Wii) Spaghetti with Tomatoes, Black Olives, Garlic, and Feta Cheese Food & Wine Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds tomatoes (about 3) seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1/2 cup black olives 1/4 pound feta cheese, crumbled 3 tablespoons drained capers 3 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 1/4…

This is a fun activity to explore the science of balance and weight in the classroom. Have the students use the classroom balance scales to see how much items from their pencil boxes weigh. Does it weigh 1 bear, 2 bears, 3 bears, or more? Your students will have fun weighing their school supplies and recording their data!

Science - Using a Balance Scale... How Many Bears Does It Weigh?

**UPDATE** I added a recording sheet with boxes for your students to either draw or write, "I think, I see, I learned, I know" for evidence of learning and let your students "show what they know". :) How many bears does it weigh? This is a fun activity to explore the science of balance and weight ...

Math Problem Solving: Measurement--Length

Inchworm, inchworm, Measuring the marigold. You and your arithmetic... You'll probably go far! So here is the beginning of my Kindergarten Measurement Unit. This is a fun unit, and that's a great thing, because we spend a lot of time on it! The unit is divided into 4 sections: length, surface area, weight and capacity. (We're also supposed to do temperature, but we cover that so much in science that we skip it in math). As with everything, we start out with lots and lots of hands-on…

Quick Post on Measuring

Hi all...very quick post on a measuring activity I did with my kiddos today! I saw this on pinterest the other day and thought it was cool....soooo my kids measured with yarn! They loved it and so did I! I made this student response sheet to go with it. I will upload this to google docs this weekend when I have more time :)

Measurement activities are a lot of fun to do! Here are some ideas and some lessons I learned along the way!

Measurement Unit Activities

I've been teaching my kids how to compare and measure objects for the past weeks. Here are some of the activities that we did, and some of the things that I learned about teaching this unit: Comparing Objects Activities We Did 1 - Compared students' hights. I started by asking students to find a buddy and to decide who was shorter and who was taller. Students practiced using the vocabulary by saying "I am taller than___ and he is shorter than me." or "I am shorter than ___ and he is taller…

What weighs more than an apple? I love this preschool math activity that helps children learn about weight and compare quantities. This activity can easily be adapted to use other objects to fit other themes. || Gift of Curiosity

What weighs more than an apple? {preschool math activity}

I enjoy teaching kids about weights and measures, which are great topics to cover in preschool and kindergarten. We have done several activities using a balance scale over the years, such as our Easter Egg balance

FORCES & MOVEMENT experiment - Race the cars several times, making sure to record which order the cars finish each time. Then find the average standings for each of the three tracks. After collecting the data, let students reflect on the effect of the tracks' textures on the outcomes of the races. Were their hypotheses correct? How did friction affect the cars' racing times?
